My digital marketing journey
Back in 2008, I built my first website. I had no idea what I was doing, so I spent a few weeks figuring out HTML and CSS, launched the thing… and then realized no one was going to visit it.
That’s when I learned about SEO. I learned it, applied it, and grew the business until it was acquired by VC in 2012. I “retired” early, which basically meant I learned how to golf and did it everyday for the next year.
My first win showed me just how powerful the internet could be. It was the future where wealth would be created for a lot of people who were willing to figure it out.
So I started experimenting…
I tried everything I saw people bragging about online into experiments to see who was full of it and who was telling the truth. Turned out, a lot of it worked:
- Built 7-figure businesses on eBay and Amazon FBA
- Created affiliate sites
- Launched small-scale SaaS products
- Ran a digital marketing agency
Eventually, I crossed paths with Ahrefs. I actually tried to get them as a client for my agency, but they ended up turning me into a full-time employee. This is where I discovered just how underserved B2B YouTube really was and it became my stomping ground.
The future of b2b YouTube
Let’s be honest… most B2B YouTube content is boring.
It’s ads, promos, testimonials… the kind of stuff no one goes to YouTube to watch.
YouTube shouldn’t just be a video hosting platform for your company. It should be a place where you earn attention, create demand for your products, and teach people something worth knowing all while providing entertainment value.
We did that at Ahrefs. We grew our channel from around 10k subscribers to over 600k. Some of the biggest companies now model their content after ours.
But here’s the thing: purely educational content is getting more competitive. There’s no real moat there anymore.
So now, I’m on a mission to transform B2B YouTube; to embed a media company inside a software company, reach massive audiences, and drive real business growth. I haven’t seen another B2B company do this yet. Maybe it’s because it’s not possible?
But I’m determined to find out. I’ll either succeed and sail to Valhalla… or sink with the ship.
What’s next?
I’ll occasionally provide updates with projects I’m working on – most likely video-related. Some will be technical and others will be weird.
